Can companies legally sell my information?

For most information, the answer is "yes". There are some states that have made it illegal to display mugshot photos, but just about everything else is fair game. While every state can create their own rules on what is and isn't public records (for example, in California, people can make their marriage records confidential). Examples of public records include:

  • Census records
  • Voter registration
  • Consumer protection information
  • Professional and business licenses
  • Real estate transactions
  • Mortgages
  • Civil court dockets
  • Criminal records
  • Criminal court dockets
  • Sex offender registry files

On top of that, a lot these companies have proprietary sources - lists of information they collect themselves, they buy, or they obtain through some other way. When using RecordSweeper, you don't erase those records, but you force people to get them from their original source instead of online.
