What does expunging my criminal record do?

While the majority of states use the word expungement, not all of them use it the same way. In Florida, for instance, your record is destroyed. In California, however, it is just removed from your criminal record. No matter what it means in your state, though, the one thing that expungement means in every state is that you can legally say "No" when someone asks you if you've been convicted of those expunged charges. It also means criminal background checks should remove or at least make a notation of your expungement.
