Disclosures
1. What this page is
This page collects Expeal's public disclosures — who we are, how we describe what we do, how our service interacts with the legal profession, and what varies by state.
In these disclosures, "Expeal," "we," "us," and "our" refer to Expeal, Inc. "You" and "your" refer to the person reading this page.
These disclosures apply to the Expeal marketing website at expeal.com. Use of the Expeal application at app.expeal.com is governed by that application's separate Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and disclosures.
2. Expeal is not a law firm
Expeal is a legal technology service provider. We are not a law firm. We do not provide legal advice. We do not represent you in any court proceeding.
What this means in practice:
- No attorney-client relationship. Using our website, reading our content, running an eligibility checker, or contacting us does not create an attorney-client relationship between you and Expeal. An attorney-client relationship requires a licensed attorney, a signed engagement, and a scope of representation. Expeal provides none of those.
- No legal advice. The content on this Site — including state guides, eligibility explanations, and process descriptions — is general legal information, not advice tailored to your situation. Two people with similar-looking criminal records can have very different outcomes under the same statute because of facts we cannot see from general information.
- No representation. Expeal does not appear in court, does not file documents on your behalf in contested matters, does not negotiate with prosecutors, and does not advocate for you in any adversarial proceeding.
- No law-firm trust account. Expeal does not hold client funds in trust. If you pay us for a product (through the application at
app.expeal.com, not through this Site), that payment is for the software service we provide, not for legal representation.
If you need legal advice or legal representation, you need a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction. The per-state subsections in §4 point to each state bar's lawyer-referral pathway as a starting point.
3. How Expeal relates to the legal profession in each state
Expeal operates nationally. Every U.S. state and the District of Columbia regulates the practice of law, and every state defines what constitutes the unauthorized practice of law ("UPL") on its own terms. What Expeal does — providing legal information and, in states where we operate a document-preparation product, generating forms based on user-provided inputs — sits outside the statutory definition of the practice of law in every state we serve. But because the definitions vary, we describe our relationship to each state's legal profession specifically in §4.
Two cross-cutting points apply everywhere:
- We are not a substitute for a lawyer. Our service is a tool. A person with a complex or unusual record — multiple convictions, out-of-state convictions, convictions with unresolved restitution or conditions, federal records, immigration implications, or active supervision — is likely better served by consulting a licensed attorney. The content on this Site does not attempt to cover edge cases that require judgment; it describes the common path.
- We point you to your state bar's lawyer-referral service. Each state's bar association (or, in some states, a regional bar or a court-administered directory) maintains a public lawyer-referral pathway. The per-state subsections in §4 identify that pathway for your state. Those services are not operated by Expeal; we are not responsible for the referrals they make or the outcomes of any representation they arrange.
4. Per-state disclosures
Each state's subsection below carries (1) the primary statute(s) governing expungement, sealing, or record-relief in that state, (2) the UPL posture for how Expeal operates in that state, (3) the bar-referral pathway for finding a state-licensed attorney, calibrated to whether the state bar operates an intake-based referral service, a searchable directory, a network of local bars, or a third-party provider, and (4) any state-specific carve-out (DC, PA, NY).
